Planning ahead

It has recently been announced that one company - Jomast - will have the UKBA contract for housing asylum seekers in the North East region (roughly Middlesbrough to Newcastle)

The immediate implication for EAASSG is that Common Ground will be in the wrong place.  There are unlikely to be many asylum seekers located within walking distance of the project.

However, at the same time, the One Stop Shop service advising asylum seekers, currently undertaken by the North of England Refugee Service, is likely to be significantly reduced.

Therefore the demand for Common Ground’s services will grow rather than shrink - though more people will have to travel further to find us.

Our plans

The building

Furthermore Common Ground is no longer adequate for our needs. If we are to continue our present work we would like to move or to take on another building more appropriate for different patterns of work.

Improving casework

We want to give our clients the best support we can.  We continue to

  • improve information systems and communications, and
  • develop expertise in different areas of casework

Strengthening leadership and management

Change and uncertainty demands a lot of our leadership and management.  We are continuously improving and will:

  • train trustees further
  • appoint a new project Manager

Developing new work

We would like to:

  • extend our opening hours
  • develop a befriending scheme
  • enable asylum seekers to engage in creative projects

But if things change we are are aware of two groups in particular who may need focused work:

  • destitute asylum seekers
  • Those with leave to remain who struggle to manage their new life

Budgeting

All of this, of course, depends on money.  When we have a clearer picture we will seek funding to enable us to achieve all our goals.
